A word from Estrela / Lapa’s real estate expert in Lisbon

Estrela / Lapa district is considered one of the best residential areas of Lisbon, associated with a prestigious image and a location sought after by wealthy Portuguese and by some foreigners living and working in Portugal. This upmarket, elegant and commercial Lisbon district was formerly home to the royal family. You will find many embassies, palaces and luxury properties, most with views of the Tagus and the city. The Lapa / Estrela district offers many great local shops and several private schools

Welcome to Estrela / Lapa

Estrela and Lapa are synonymous with history and charm. Many of the most traditional families in the city live there. Residential area by excellence, very central with well-established shops. You will find an impressive garden and a basilica in the Estrela (Star) district. The basilica (built in the 18th century), located at Largo da Estrela combines Baroque and Neoclassical styles.

The dome and the façade (with two twin towers and statues of saints and other figures) are one of the postcard pictures of Lisbon. It is open daily until eight.

Just across from the Basilica: the Estrela Garden (or Guerra Junqueiro Garden). Banana trees, jacarandas and plane trees, kingfishers, peacocks and swans are waiting for you along with a “musical silence” in one of the most elegant gardens in the capital. Like a romantic English garden, Jardim da Estrela houses the oldest wrought iron bandstand in Lisbon.

Good to know

  • In sharp contrast with neighbouring Bairro Alto, Estrela and Lapa is bathed in a bourgeois atmosphere, clearly noticeable in their streets full of vine-covered houses, their green spaces and galleries.
  • This rather upmarket district only receives a handful of visitors, despite sites such as the neoclassical Basilica da Estrela.
  • The National Museum of Ancient Art is one of the largest museums in the Portuguese capital both in size and for the richness of its collections, where originals by Dürer are displayed.
  • On the waterfront, the Alcântara docks are renowned for their restaurants and trendy cafes and the view of the April the 25th Bridge (designed by the same company as the San Francisco bridge) is lovely.

Some figures…

  • Carcavelos Beach: 20 minutes by train (Cais do Sodré)
  • Cascais: 40 minutes by train (Cais do Sodré)
  • Airport: Humberto Delgado Lisbon Airport : 20 minutes’ drive
  • Train station: Rossio Train Station : 20 minutes’ walk

Estrela / Lapa is the wealthy city center of Lisbon

This is a great place to read a book, walk, run or have a drink. If you have a laptop, take it with you, there is free Wi-Fi. There are many public transports available: buses (9, 20, 22 and 38) and trams (the 25 and the famous 28).

The declaration of the Lapa district as a parish dates back to 1770. More than two centuries later, it is where most embassies are located: China, Ireland, Netherlands, United Kingdom and Sweden to name a few.

In this district, there is a sense of being in an old Lisbon, where time stood still. Do not miss the “A Padaria da Lapa” restaurant, the “Casa de chá da Lapa”, an elegant space that is already part of history, popular with many personalities and Lisbon’s elite.

To relax, enjoy the “Lapa Palace Spa”.

For a night of Fado, you are in the right place, “Sr. Vinho” has been a restaurant / Fado venue since 1975.

The house specialties are cod, baked goat or pork loin. When the venue goes silent, it is because the Fado singing is about to begin. The in-house singers are truly exceptional.
