Portimão is located between Alvor and Ferragudo in the Algarve

Portimão: 2nd largest city in the Algarve

A long history
The cemeteries of Alcalar and Monte Canelas, as well as other scattered archaeological discoveries within the municipality, including the remains of a village dating from the 2nd or 3rd century BC In Vila Velha de Alvor, confirm that this area was inhabited by early humans. In addition, there is no doubt about the presence of the Romans; several Roman ruins and objects, such as coins and pots, were found there.

A little further away, you can see the ruins of the São Francisco convent, a Jesuit convent founded in 1530. Its structure was badly damaged by the 1755 earthquake, then the building became private property. Today it belongs to the Sousa Coutinho family who, according to rumours, dreamed of opening a luxurious hotel on this spot. To date, this is still to happen. It seems that the municipality wants to buy back the convent ruins from the family. As it is private property, it is not possible to visit it, but the imposing building can be admired by walking around it. The Clube Naval de Portimão restaurant offers a breathtaking view of its layout. You can enjoy a tasty croque-monsieur and a cold beer, while admiring the ruins of the convent.

The Portimão of today
There are discoveries around every street corner. It is a great place to live and a great city to explore. Over the last three decades, Portimão has become one of the main tourist destinations in the Algarve. To cope with this growing number of visitors, hotel complexes, apartment complexes, new residential districts and leisure facilities have considerably modified the landscape. Nevertheless, Portimão retains its heritage and traditions.

Sublime beaches
The beaches are excellent and a wide choice of leisure activities, restaurants and entertainment is also available. Indeed, Portimão has all you need! The Alvor and da Rocha beaches are probably the most popular places for holidaymakers looking for sun, sand, nightlife and relaxation in general. Don’t forget the large beach south of Portimão (at the very end of São Lourenço da Barrosa Avenue). It is a splendid and unexpected refuge to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.

Fantastic shops
Portimão has the best shops in the region, including the famous Áqua shopping centre. If you like good deals, don’t miss the opportunity to visit the Chinese bazaars in your neighbourhood. These Chinese emporiums are very common in Portugal and sell everything. Portimão is no exception to this rule – the three closest are located behind the river and are apparently among the best in the Algarve. Whether looking for a Maneki neko, a sports steering wheel for your car, wool to knit a Christmas jumper or curtains for your living room, you will definitely find them in Chinese bazaars.

In the same area, there is also a branch of Paga Pouco. A beautiful fabric store, as its name suggests, at a low price compared to some of the shops in the centre.
In summer, street vendors set up along the river to showcase their products, which range from tribal masks to slippers. A walk along the docks is ideal to end the day.

Great places to eat and be entertained
Many restaurants, both inside and outside the city walls, serve a wide range of traditional Portuguese and international cuisine. It is obvious that fresh fish is always on the menu, mainly in the restaurants located along the river. Portimão hosts the region’s famous sardine festival every year.

The Portimão Marina is a new project that includes the four-star Tivoli Resort complex. It has several shops, bars, restaurants, trendy nightclubs and, of course, exclusive yachts to be admired.

The Continente de Portimão is home to a cinema with six theatres. For a more intimate cinema, visit the Algarcine Cinemas de Portimão. These two cinemas show the latest films in English.

The Portimão Municipal Theatre organises several events each year, including plays and pantomimes, ballets and music. Many shows are in Portuguese, but some are performed in English. Everyone can enjoy ballets and musicals because the acoustics of the theatre is fantastic.

The Portimão Arena is one of the latest innovations in terms of events. Whether you like its plane hangar design or not, you can’t deny that this place is excellent and perfect for hosting various sporting events, exhibitions, conferences and concerts.

Golf is obviously in the spotlight in Portimão with six impressive courses to choose from in the region. Indoor swimming pools, tennis clubs and a wide variety of other sports facilities are open to residents and visitors alike.

The Algarve International Autodrome is the international race track of Portimão. It hosts several major races and a racing school, karting tracks and a clay track.

There is always a lot to see and do in Portimão. You will find almost every type of boat trip possible and imaginable, from cave excursions to exciting boat rides, dolphin watching and pirate boat rides. Portimão also offers fishing expeditions and a wide range of water sports, including diving, as the city has approved diving centres. For thrill-seekers, the Alvor aerodrome offers you the opportunity to go skydiving.
