Tavira: From mountains to beach In Tavira, the Serra do Caldeirão runs down to the sea through a succession of gently sloping hills, covered with orchards typical of dry lands, where olive, almond, fig and carob trees emanate sweet smells that blend with those of the sea. The coast is sandy and soft, tranquil and very attractive, with 18 km of white and fine sand beaches and warm waters.
Boat rides are a must if you want to observe the fauna and flora of the wetland, especially the aquatic birdlife. It is estimated that more than 30,000 birds are welcomed each year at the Ria Formosa.
