The advantages of the Algarve

A region of contrasts

The Algarve, a region bordered by the ocean, offers its inhabitants a mild and sunny winter and landscapes teeming with diverse and tropical cultures. At the bow of Europe, the Moorish kingdom of “Al-Gharb” was for more than five centuries a rich intellectual and cultural region, the starting point for great Portuguese discoveries. This past is now inscribed on the walls of the small white villages. The wild coast made up of cliffs, long beaches, creeks, lagoons, barrier islands, salt flats… contrasts with the picturesque and mountainous hinterland of the Monchique granite massif. Discover a surprising and enchanting region, as much for its diversity as its beauty and authenticity.

Endless sandy beaches, majestic ochre cliffs, traditional white walled villages, lively resorts, renowned gastronomy, golf and surf paradise, value for money, quality hotel … From Villa Real de Santo Antonio, on the Spanish border to Cape St. Vincent, the most south-westerly point of Europe, the Algarve is a ribbon of 250 km of colourful coasts. Contrasting with the intense blue of the Atlantic Ocean, imposing red cliffs alternate with magnificent fine sand beaches. In the background, the typical white villages coexist with lively seaside resorts by day and by night. Not to mention the 34 golf courses that make the Algarve a real paradise for golfers and the 3 aqua parks in the region that will delight the youngest!

A region only 2h30 flying time from London

The Algarve region is very accessible. Flights are available from the main French airports on scheduled flights via Lisbon (or on charter flights from Paris in high season with Aigle Azur) and the average flight time is only 2h30. Since 2015, low-cost airlines (EasyJet, Ryanair) have been operating direct flights to Faro (capital of the Algarve). Flights land at Faro airport, which also has the advantage of being centrally located. It is then very easy to reach the whole region from the main seaside resorts: Quinta do Lago, Vale de Lobo, Albufeira, Armaçao de Pêra, Praia de Rocha, Alvor or Lagos. Whatever the seaside resort chosen, you can enjoy a day trip, distances are never a problem since the Algarve is only a maximum 140 km wide from west to east.

300 sunny days a year

Algarve is one of the sunniest regions in the world with a little more than 300 days of sunshine per year. Like the Canary Islands, this beautiful region is a pleasant place to live all year round due to its temperate Mediterranean climate.

The south of Portugal is much drier than the north. This part of the country also benefits from better weather. So, if it is difficult to take a swim in the north, the southern beaches are much more pleasant and more accessible in the Algarve. Even in winter, the climate in southern Portugal is still more pleasant. In Faro, for example, rainfall is rare, occurring mainly in April and May. The summers, which are quite long, often last until October, offering the inhabitants a very mild late season.

The climate in the Algarve

Algarve climate in summer
In the Algarve region in general, summer is hot and dry. From June to September, temperatures vary from 19 to 28°C and can reach nearly 30°C during the months of July and August. Fortunately, the sea breeze makes the heat more bearable than in Porto, and the warm waters of the Atlantic are at the right temperature for swimming and various water activities.

Climate in autumn
From the end of September to November, autumn also offers ideal weather conditions for a stay in the Algarve. The days are long and sunny, with temperatures ranging from 14°C to just over 20°C.

Winter in the Algarve
Winter from December to February is the wettest season of the year. Nevertheless, the days remain sunny, with an average of 10 hours of sunshine per day. Snow is scarce and temperatures remain pleasant for a walk on the beach, with a minimum temperature of 11°C.

Spring climate
From March to May, spring brings its shimmering colours to the entire region. With temperatures ranging from 12 to 23°C, the weather is particularly ideal for discovering the hinterland and visiting small mountain villages.

200 km of coastline and a hundred beaches!

It is too often forgotten that the beaches of the Algarve are among the most beautiful in Europe and more broadly in the Mediterranean basin. They have nothing to envy to that of Tunisia or the Moroccan Atlantic coast, for example. They are indeed much more beautiful with their imposing ochre cliffs. They are also much more diversified: sometimes imposing, stretching to infinity, sometimes intimate, locked between cliffs, inlets, on islands, lagoons, some known, others secret and only accessible to those who know how to get there.

And finally, they are also cleaner! The waters are transparent and the beaches are extremely clean: No less than 50 beaches are classified as Blue Flag. In addition, there is a very high quality tourist infrastructure to welcome seaside visitors Parking, signage, toilets, first aid stations… The water is generally calm, especially in summer with a temperate water temperature (between 19 and 21°C from May to September).

Culture & gastronomy

Monuments, secular dwellings, religious rituals and craft markets represent a heritage that makes the Algarve a region that is not just about its miles of beaches. Many towns and villages are of cultural interest because of the beauty of traditional architecture or the presence of historical monuments: Tavira with its incomparable charm, Faro and its old quarter surrounded by ramparts, Lagos and its ancestral maritime tradition..

As for gastronomy, harvesting the best that the sea and land have to offer is enough: fish and seafood caldeiradas, clam cataplanas; confectionery made from figs and almonds, and wines from the DOC  sub-regions of Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa and Tavira. It is no coincidence that the Algarve region is the Portuguese region with the highest concentration of Michelin stars.

Local wines, local products, seafood… It is also gastronomy.

A golfer’s paradise!

The Algarve was voted “Best Golf Destination in the World” by the I.A.G.T.O. (International Association of Golf Tour Operators)! Since the first golf course in the region opened in 1966, the Algarve has been living a true love story with the little white ball. Of the 70 or so golf courses in Portugal… 34 are located in the Algarve and within a maximum radius of 120 Kilometres. In other words, this region is a paradise for any golfer looking to discover new playgrounds.

It must be said that the Algarve has solid assets with, first of all, its climate which allows you to practice this sport all year round: the Algarve can boast an average of 300 days of sunshine per year! The success of golf in the Algarve is such that it is imperative to book your “tee times” in advance. Golf clubs favour their members and as a result, the time slots for external customers are in high demand.
